19 string Saarijärvi kantele
With free playing guide & song book!
The famous folk kantele from central Finland, was first developed in the 19th century as a dance instrument and is commonly played with a wooden stick, although the standard picking method also works fine. The Saarijärvi kantele is currently undergoing a renaissance due mainly to Finnish musicians Pauliina Syrjälä and Maija Kauhanen who use it as their main instrument, both receiving worldwide recognition.
Our model is set up in the traditional diatonic C major tuning, with 16 melody strings and 3 bass strings, C, G & F. It is constructed from a birch soundboard and back with alder sides and maple for the pins. All metal parts/strings are top quality, German made. The soundhole is a 13 hole baltic style one (see main picture) however, on request we can cut a traditional lyre design (also pictured).
Upon purchase, we also email the customer a free PDF copy of Joyce E Hakalas 'Saarijärvi kantele playing guide', which features detailed playing instructions and notation for over twenty traditional songs.
